About The Artwork

Holly Graham’s What looks to be a piece of fruit is part of a collection of works made during her residency at Southwark Park Galleries in 2019.

The design draws on her research around food and movement, workshops with local young refugees and asylum seekers, and texts acknowledging the difficult colonial contexts of the Mayflower story. The work incorporates imagery of the symbolic value and medicinal qualities of citrus fruits – which were discovered in the 16th and 17th centuries to be an antidote to scurvy that many European sailors contracted on long expansionist sea-faring voyages – and fragments of mid-20th century photographs documenting the unloading of citrus fruits at local docks.

Originally made for Southwark Park Galleries’ annual flagpole commission.
