Hardeep Pandhal // The End (2021)
Generously donated to Southwark Park Galleries by the artist to celebrate the launch of Trouble In Outer Heaven: Portable Ops Plus, an exhibition focusing on the influence and fan cultures of Metal Gear Solid, one of the most popular video game franchises of all time.
“This is my drawing of The End, possibly my favourite of the many bizarre adversaries from the video game Metal Gear Solid. The End is a 100-plus-year-old legendary sniper who could apparently photosynthesise and ‘talk to the forest’.
Defeating The End in a traditional sniper standoff would test the player’s patience. If this method proved to be too arduous, you could even defeat The End by not playing the game for a week or so, after which you’d discover him dead due to being ‘disengaged’ in the game-world for so long, thus closing the supposed gap between the game play and narrative, which the series was renowned for”. – Hardeep Pandhal, 2021.
