City Racing: The Life and Times of an Artist-run Gallery 1988 - 1998

Making the book was the first time we had analysed why and how we ran City Racing, and know we recognise now our initial naivety and conservatism but also our persevearance and luck...That we did was because we created opportunities out if the little we had - a bit like turning our cul-de-sacs into a roundabout!'

City Racing charts ten years (1988-98) of an artist-run gallery in London. It reveals how five cash-strapped artists developed a squat into a locally and internationally respected gallery, giving artists access to an independently run but publicly funded project-space. The founding artist members - John Burgess, Keith Coventry, Matt Hale, Paul Noble and Peter Owen - provide a reflection and overview of a unique moment in recent art history through collective account, personal recollection, visual and written documentation.
